How to Avoid Getting Robbed at Hostels (and while traveling in general!)

My former roommate went backpacking through Europe with her best friend a few years ago.  Backpacking and hopping from hostel to hostel is a great experience, but they ran into a common experience–while they slept, one of them was robbed by their co-hostel-mates.

They never found out who it was, but it’s difficult being able to stay in a hostel while also keeping track of your stuff.

My other backpacking friend, Emily, just passed on this new product to me.  It’s pricey, but could help alleviate a lot of the problems with staying in hostels.

Enter the FlakSack.

The FlakSack not only locks up, but is slash proof and easy to carry.

This is the bag that everybody, at some point in their life, wishes they had. Sometimes you just need a safe place to put your personal items and valuables while you carry them or do something else. Our purpose for creating this bag really is that simple. This product is essentially a portable safe that lets you live more and worry less.

This is obviously great for hostel travel but is also great for other things.  For example, I love going to resorts, but worry about leaving my stuff at the chair.

With this product, I can lock it up on the nearby umbrella.  Not only would I not need to worry about the entire bag being snatched, no one would be able to slash it and steal my wallet out of it.

I love to read at the pool but get paranoid about going in the water, so this is a great solution.  The only problem is, it currently retails at $179, which is really pricey.

However, compared to the cost of being robbed (and peace of mind), it just might be worth it.

  1. The way I see things nowadays is if you plan to use that bag for at least 179 days (and if you travel a lot… you most likely will) then it is worth it. Think of it costing to ‘rent’ for $1 a day.

I’m guessing the hefty price tag is due to the fabric and construction?

This would be great to take on Gulf carriers to/from China, which other bloggers have said have the highest pickpocketing/theft rates in economy class.

I was hoping they’d release it by July so I can use it while in Rio in August. Ah well. Thx for sharing.

  2. It’s not completely thief-proof……as they forgot one thing: The lock is not cut-proof, so anyone with the tools can just cut the lock and take out the contents out from the bag!!!!!

  3. The PacSafe is similar but half the cost. Amazon sells it:

I’ve been contemplating it for exactly your scenario… when I’m at a beach or an amusement park even.
