Leeroy Jenkins is the folk hero of the gaming world. Â What he did was pretty stupid, but you still have a soft spot for him. Â (And root for him every time–just in case he ends up being successful the next time you watch the video.)
Leeroy Jenkins is the name of a World of Warcraft character that is known for screaming out his name before ignorantly charging headlong into battle, killing everyone in his party. Though the video may have been staged, Leeroy Jenkins was embraced by Blizzard, making several appearances in World of Warcraft products.
The video was first uploaded to World of Warcraft fansite Warcraft Movies[13] on May 11th, 2005. The guild PalsForLife[1] posted the video to the official World of Warcraft forums[2] asking for constructive criticism on their gameplay. The video showed the guild intensely discussing battle strategies, preparing to enter a dangerous zone in the game known as the about to enter the Rookery[14] in the Upper Blackrock Spire, known for its large quantity of dragonspawn. Suddenly, a paladin in the group named Leeroy Jenkins, who appeared to have missed the discussion, yells out “alright, lets do this!†before charging into the area, killing everyone in the party.
Now, if you haven’t seen the video, here it is. Â Also, this is your LAST CHANCE to avoid spoilers about Game of Thrones.
If you are caught up on Game of Thrones, the World of Warcraft scene might remind you of something.
I’ll give you a second to ponder.
Ah yes, John Snow is Leeroy Jenkins.
In case audiences needed a reminder of Jon’s endless penchant for blindly rushing in, Sunday night’s “The Battle Of The Bastards†provided it in full, with the former Lord Commander charging out ahead of his entire army after being provoked by his villainous counterpart Ramsay Bolton. This strategic masterstroke—which nearly gets Jon crushed to death under a mountain of his own dead men—is eerily reminiscent of another would-be fantasy hero with more foot-speed and courage than common sense: Leeroy Jenkins.
But as a testament to just how perfect this is, check out the YouTube video someone made, dubbing the Leeroy audio over the Game of Thrones footage.
Amazing.
