When I went for status on US Airways, I did a silver preferred trial (because it is the cheapest, and you can achieve as high status as you can fly, no matter what initial status you choose). I also purchased a US Airways Club Membership because I would be in and out of airports so much. Even though you can get into clubs using certain credit cards, I do not like the restrictions of having to fly the same carrier. I like being able to pop into the United, or even Lufthansa Clubs, while waiting for my US Airways flight.
