This Vodka is Distilled from Cow’s Milk

Vodka is made from many things–grain (including corn), potatoes, and even grapes.

There have been efforts to get the EU to define what vodka is, but none have passed so far.  Some believe this is to keep newer competitors out of the market (especially grape vodkas, which allow competitors from a different climate to enter the market).

Instead, vodka is loosely defined as being:

made from any agricultural produce.

When I bartended, I served a variety of types of vodka, but I never served vodka quite like this one.

A company is now making vodka from cow’s milk.

When I first heard of this product, I figured it had to be some sort of joke.  But it isn’t.

From their website:

ALL ABOUT BLACK COW

Situated on England’s West Dorset coast we produce the worlds only Pure Milk Vodka™ made entirely from the milk of grass grazed cows and nothing else. Fresh whole milk makes an exceptionally smooth vodka with a unique creamy character.

THE IDEA CAME FROM?

Pure Milk Vodkaâ„¢ is the invention of West Dorset dairy farmer Jason Barber. His inspiration came from a desire to diversify the produce from his 250 strong dairy herd and his deep personal interest in vodka.

HOW IS IT MADE?

The milk is separated into curds and whey. The curds are used to make cheese, the whey is fermented into a beer using a special yeast that converts the milk sugar into alcohol. This milk beer is then distilled and treated to our secret blending process. The vodka is then triple filtered and finished, before being hand bottled. Black Cow is made from the same milk that is used to make Barber’s 1833 cheddar, and our own Black Cow Deluxe Cheddar.

This is a brand new product that is currently only avaliable in the the state of California for those in the US right now.  They also recently attended a vodka event in New Orleans, which suggests that they are shopping the product around to more states.  I first heard about this product from the blog Alcademics, which I recommend reading!

I actually have a few trips to California coming up, so I’m thinking about seeking this out to try it.  I like cows.  I like vodka.  I … should like cow vodka?

Would you try this?  From everything I’ve read, it’s incredible smooth.  (And maybe it won’t be so weird to drink vodka with chocolate chip cookies anymore).

Are you writing this story with or without kumis in mind as a former bartender?

  2. I am in SC and ordered a bottle online and needless to say I have now ordered two more.

    This is utterly amazing stuff.
