Video of a 747 Emergency Landing Due to Gear Failure

This video is incredible.  Not because of what happens, but because of what doesn’t happen.

When you watch it through the first time, it doesn’t look remarkable.  Because the pilot did such a good job.

But the right outer landing gear never deployed.  That means the right wing wasn’t supported at all during landing.

For a landing like this, you need to dump the fuel (just in case), and you need a really balanced landing.

That’s difficult.

But this pilot makes it look easy.

This was a Gatwick to Las Vegas flight in a Virgin owned 747.

From Avationcv.com:

After circling for a few hours, the aircraft made an emergency landing shortly after sunset, with the right outer MLG still retracted. Some passengers suffered slight injuries after a Virgin Atlantic plane carrying 462 people was forced to make an emergency landing in London due to a problem with its landing gear.

As you can see in the video, the plane had a beautiful landing, given the circumstances.  Kudos to the pilot.

Some of us here, particularly me, would like to buy you a drink and shake your hand.

(Loneliness, that’s the bottom line. I was never happy as a child . . . Christmas Ted, what does that mean to you? It was living hell. Do you know what its
like falling in the mud and getting kicked, in the head. With an iron boot? Of course you don’t, no one does, that never happens. Sorry Ted, that’s a dumb question.)

  1. It’s worth mentioning that this actually occurred in 2014

  2. How does someone suffer “slight injuries” from a landing like this? What were they doing? Clipping their fingernail during the landing?

    And yeah… 2014?

I just spit out my coffee at that. Yeah, that looks like a softer landing than most landings at DCA.

And sorry–I’ll make it more clear next time. Browsing youtube is a compulsive habit of mine, and I come across cool videos like this.
