Using US Airways Points Post-Merger, not all Star Alliance Airlines Gone

US Airways has made an announcement about when it is leaving Star Alliance and how you can use miles post-merger.

Here’s the run-down:

They will be  exiting Star Alliance on March 30, 2014. You can book trips using miles and earn miles on Star Alliance up until that date.  After that date, you will not be able to earn miles on the usual partner airlines–even if you booked the trip pre-merger.

There will be no more codeshare flights with United, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa or SWISS.  If you booked a codeshare with them post-March 30th, it will change over to one of those airline’s flight numbers.

You can still earn and redeem miles on: Aegean, Air China, Air New Zealand, Avianca, Ethiopian Airlines, Eva, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, TAM, TAP and Turkish Airways.

US Airways and American Airlines post-merger loyalty points, elite status, and alliance.Star Alliance lounges and United Club lounges are gone post-March 30th, but US Airways Club members can start using American Admiral Clubs.

Interestingly, I haven’t quite qualified for Chairman yet for next year (almost there!) and I received an offer extending my Chairman status to the end of March.  That makes me wonder if it is just that much easier for US Airways to end everything at once, vs. changing people’s access and status twice.

If you have questions about how the changes affect you, US Airways maintains a FAQ on their website about the merger.

  1. What is your source on this? “You can still earn and redeem miles on: Aegean, Air China, Air New Zealand, Avianca, Ethiopian Airlines, Eva, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, TAM, TAP and Turkish Airways.”

  2. Will Admiral Club members be able to use US Airways clubs or will they all just be turned into Admiral Clubs? B

They are announcing what the Admiral Club members can do in a few weeks, but my strong guess it will be reciprocal for both starting in Jan. I believe they aren’t combining the club until they combine the airline names, but don’t hold me to that!

  3. “Earn and redeem miles” – but nothing about whether that’s RDM only (like some of AA’s non-OW partners) or if there’s EQM in there as well.

  4. So can no longer “redeem” div miles on Lufthansa since not mentioned in your list?? Doesn’t seem right. Thx

  5. is tried using US DM to book LH award flights for July, 2014… the US phone rep said i could only book award travel which will be COMPLETED by march 31, 2014!!!
    for realz?
