Flight Attendants Must Ask Permission to Marry on Qatar Airways

In addition, Qatar reserves the right to fire them for getting pregnant.

Qatar Airways, not surprisingly based out of Qatar, is a state-owned carrier.  The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) is making a push to get the ICAO (the International Civil Aviation Organization) to take action on this during a conference currently in progress.

The article also states that the women are subject to more than just that:

“We have stories from workers that show they are one of the worst airlines in history and that women are at risk of being stalked, are subject to curfews in their accommodation and that there are attempts to bribe workers who will report other workers who are on duty,” Sharan Burrow, the general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, elaborated to Al Arabiya English in an interview Wednesday.

Qatar is growing quickly and recently became a redemption partner for American Airlines.  It will join the OneWorld Alliance at the end of October.

  1. American would be a better place if we followed these same rules. Remind me not to go to the hotel bar qatar flight attendants are at…

  2. I think I read somewhere, Emirates will fire you immediately if you are not married and get pregnant. (Sorry, don’t remember the source)

  3. That use to be standard rules for all airlines. We my MIL was a FA on AA (back when they were still called “stews”) she was moved to a desk job when she got married. They later changed the rule while she was working for them and she was allowed to be a stew again. She was also hired partly because as the woman who hired her said “I could tell you weren’t going to gain weight”.
