Huge Discounts on Tumi

Tumi is so expensive, when there’s a huge discount, it’s still, well, ridiculously expensive.  But it’s Tumi!

I’m currently being tempted by a sale on Gilt.com for Tumi luggage and bags.

I’ve been telling myself I need to spend more on luggage because it will save me more over time.  (RIP my carry-on after my last trip…)  I’ve been eyeing Rimowa and Tumi.

An ad for this sale just popped up on Facebook.  And man am I super tempted.

Edit: from the comments, thanks to Shaun:  “When i log into my Citi AA card it offers me 20% off (up to $50) my first GILT purchase if i sign up through their link. Not sure if everyone w/ a citi card has this offer, but an extra $50 off makes this sale even better. If anyone plans to check it out you might want to log into your citi account and see if you are targeted on this.”

Disclaimer: I don’t have any affiliate links in this.  I don’t have my referral link either because man is that part of the Gilt.com website confusing.

  2. Prices are good (esp. with an add’l discount) but not “ridiculously” so – and it’s worth considering alternatives like B&R and Rimowa esp. for carry-on luggage. Rimowa is more stylish and has better service (I know from personal experience – Tumi refuses to cover things that should be covered within the warranty period, whereas Rimowa often sometimes fixes things free even after the warranty has lapsed). B&R has the best warranty of all. For carry-on luggage I much prefer spinners (four rather than two wheels) and here Rimowa and B&R are both much, much better than Tumi: their wheels are much bigger and they are double wheels, so they roll with much less effort and are more robust (esp. on carpet – common in hotels and more airports than you’d think). Both Rimowa and B&R also have recessed wheels, the advantages being that you get a bit more interior space and the wheels are less exposed and therefore less susceptible to damage.

Thanks for this. I was tempted to hold out for Rimowa. My main fear is that it’ll never be cheap enough for me to actually buy!

      • Rimowa is basically never discounted. If you travel to Germany you can save some money by buying there and getting the tax refund (depending on the exchange rate it works out to be about 10-15% cheaper than in the US). Rimowa is a bit like Apple – pricey, but stylish and the resale value is amazing (I’ve sold them on eBay, used, for more than I paid in Germany!) But B&R has great quality and the best warranty in the business for about half the price of Rimowa – the Torq spinners are both stylish and functional.

  3. @02nz, Where do you suggest to get Rimowa in Dusseldorf as I plan to be in Dusseldorf 2nd week of Jan. I can drive to Cologne as well.

  4. Also, don’t forget cash back portals: 5% from Upromise, 4% Ebates and 3% from MrRebates. Pay with your Discover cards and get 5% back on online purchases… 🙂
